What HbA1c Level Is Considered High?

HbA1c (also written as A1C) reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months. The general interpretation is:

HbA1c Interpretation
Below 5.7% Normal
5.7% to 6.4% Prediabetes
6.5% or higher Diabetes (if confirmed with repeat testing or other diagnostic criteria)

For people who already have diabetes, “high” depends on their treatment goals:

  • Below 7.0%: Common target for many adults with diabetes.
  • 7.0% to 8.0%: May be acceptable for some people depending on age, other health conditions, and risk of low blood sugar.
  • Above 8.0%: Generally considered above target and may indicate that blood sugar control could be improved.
  • Above 9–10%: Significantly elevated, associated with a higher risk of diabetes-related complications if it persists.

Estimated average glucose (eAG)

An HbA1c corresponds approximately to these average blood glucose levels:

  • 5.7% → ~117 mg/dL (6.5 mmol/L)
  • 6.5% → ~140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)
  • 7.0% → ~154 mg/dL (8.6 mmol/L)
  • 8.0% → ~183 mg/dL (10.2 mmol/L)
  • 9.0% → ~212 mg/dL (11.8 mmol/L)

If you have a specific HbA1c result (for example, 6.8% or 8.3%), tell me the number and whether you have diabetes, and I can help explain what it means in your situation.
